People-first spotlight: Shelly Alexander
Our people are what make us who we are, and we look forward to sharing their stories with you. This month we shine the spotlight on Shelly Alexander, Manager, Corporate Governance and Assistant Corporate Secretary since 2020.
In your own words, please describe your role:
My role involves implementing the decisions of the board of directors for Concert Real Estate Corporation, Concert Properties Ltd, and all subsidiaries as well as our Infrastructure group of companies and the CREC Commercial Fund.
I mainly act as an adviser to the company directors and handle company share transactions – things like issuing new shares, arranging dividend payments and observing all legal requirements. I also get an opportunity to liaise with auditors, lawyers, tax advisers, bankers and shareholders on board governance issues.
In addition, I organize, attend and take minutes for the directors’ annual general meeting of shareholders and investor meetings, and a big part of this role is ensuring compliance.
What would you tell someone who is thinking about joining the Concert team?
For me personally, Concert is a great fit for my career goals and is a real genuine community of hard-working people who care about one another, and care for the communities that we are lucky enough to develop high-quality real estate in. If your career vision is to work in a place that respects employees and offers incredible growth opportunities, then Concert should be high on your list of preferred employers.
How do Concert’s values and mission align with your personal values?
Concert’s mission of creating a people-first future aligns with my personal values on many different levels. If we invest in people, nurture talent, and foster a sense of community spirit, then we’ll have done a great job of making the future brighter.
What is your favourite memory of your time with Concert?
In December 2020, I had only been with Concert for two months but already felt appreciated and like one of the team. I experienced my first Christmas at Concert and received a nice cozy fleece blanket and some gift vouchers for Save on Foods as a Christmas present at the height of COVID. This was such a nice gesture ensuring families had a lovely Christmas dinner on the table and a cozy blanket to curl up in.
Concert really knows how to show their employees just how much they are appreciated regardless of their tenure or job title – bravo!
What are your hobbies/interests outside of work?
Outside of work, I spend a lot of time in the North Shore forests hiking, biking and trekking with my boys, bug hunting and enjoying nature. When the sun shines in Vancouver, we head over to Deep Cove. This summer we are learning to paddle board as well as continuing to enjoy kayaking.
