Over the past month Tapestry communities across the country kicked off #FitFeb, a holistic health initiative that offers a range of fun activities to residents and employees alike.
Part of our larger philosophy that focuses on the “Seven Dimensions of Wellness”, a framework that promotes holistic wellness in the physical, emotional, intellectual, social, spiritual, environmental and occupational realms, #FitFeb has run for several years and has seen engagement and support for the program increase each year.
From snowball fights and balance challenges to seated volleyball and CPR certification classes for employees, #FitFeb programming incorporated fun and healthy physical activity across Tapestry communities. There were also several community-specific initiatives.
To add a bit of fun at Wesbrook Village and Arbutus Walk, an element of friendly competition was included. Residents and employees were separated into the red or blue team, and kept track of their activity to earn points for their side. At the end of the month, prizes were awarded at a closing ceremony for #FitFeb.
Tapestry at Wesbrook Village implemented a network to support holistic wellness. The “Accountabilibuddies” initiative partnered employees and residents with each other to provide encouragement, hold each other accountable, and support each other in earning points for their #FitFeb team.
“This month has been great for me to start my weight loss journey and form new healthy habits to help manage my Parkinson’s. I’ve lost 10 pounds since I started and I can feel the difference in my life already!” says resident Peter Harrison, who was paired up with server Jake Croker. “Jake and I check in with each other about what we’re doing. Now that the Red Team is behind, we're making sure we climb stairs together to get points for our team. We even have other residents joining us.”
At Tapestry at Village Gate West, residents started a new Body, Mind and Core class in February that was met with great success. Each Friday afternoon residents learned mindfulness basics, and relaxation and self-development techniques, while also connecting with each other. One resident commented that she couldn’t believe the benefits that meditation has brought to her life.
“The heart of living at Tapestry communities is the belief in enabling healthier, happier and longer lives,” says Mark Andrew, Senior Vice President, Tapestry. “Annual initiatives like #FitFeb help to remind our residents and employees of the importance of a holistic approach to health and wellness – and it’s a lot of fun!”
Getting fit doesn’t need to stop in February. This summer, as part of a milestone year of events celebrating Concert’s 30th anniversary and its ongoing commitment to community, we are bringing together employees across BC and Ontario for two unforgettable weekends of cycling and celebration in support of the 2019 Ride to Conquer Cancer.
