Project CHEF Brings Students and Seniors Together at Tapestry

In a fast paced world with an abundance of highly processed foods, many children miss out on the opportunity to gain the skillset and mindset required to develop life-long healthy eating practices.

Project CHEF, a non-profit organization partnered with the Vancouver School Board, aims to change that. Through a number of hands-on classes for children in kindergarten through grade seven, their mission is to teach children the knowledge and skills necessary to make healthy food choices.

One such class, offered in partnership with Concert’s senior living community Tapestry at Wesbrook Village, was initiated by resident Eleanor Lee four years ago. A retired home economics teacher, Eleanor saw the value in intergenerational connection and mobilized a group of Tapestry residents to meet with grades four and five students from Queen Mary Elementary School once a week.

Residents share their stories about the food traditions they grew up with, and the children learn about ingredients and cooking methods as they prepare a nutritious meal to enjoy around the table together.

“The seniors and students have so much to share with each other,” says Adena Waffle, Vice President, Seniors Housing, “It’s a powerful partnership that is helping to preserve traditions and empower kids to make healthy choices every day.”

In support of Project CHEF, Tapestry at Wesbrook Village will host a multi-course fundraising dinner on June 1, 2017. The evening will celebrate the program accomplishments to date and provide students with the opportunity to practice the skills they’ve learned.
